Accomplishments in 2007/08 include:

Agri-Food

Governments are increasingly recommending new long-term agri-food policies and programs that support local producers. CCGD is an active participant in these discussions, ensuring that governments understand the retailer/distributor business model as regulations are developed.

Key consultations also took place between CCGD and processor groups.  At our initiative, we attended the annual meeting of the Chicken Farmers of Ontario.  This was a chance to educate over 300 farmers and processors on the route to market for their products through our members.

Environment

We negotiated lower fees for the grocery portion of the Stewardship Ontario initiative to divert plastic packaging from landfills.  The result was $250,000 in savings (costs avoided) for members.  We also ensured that members could put stewardship fees "on the tape" for Ontario Household Hazardous Waste program.

A national industry best practice on plastic bags was established and updated.  It focused on the reduction and recycling opportunities, and the use of reusable alternatives.  Using this document as a guideline Ontario was able to drop proposed taxes and bans on retailer - provided carry-out bags in favor of a 3R approach that builds on existing member programs that provide consumers with alternatives to plastic bags.

In Toronto, we were able to prevent a local water bottle tax, through discussion with Toronto City Council and the municipal Public Works Committee.

Food Safety

CCGD worked with members, partner associations and government departments and agencies to develop a set of tools and best practices to ensure that proper food storage and handling procedures are used throughout the supply chain.

To better train employees within the industry the FoodWise program, our National Food Handler Certification program, was redesigned and modernized making it more retailer oriented, user friendly and cost effective.  Specifically, in Ontario we ensured that the mandatory food handler certification in Hamilton was harmonized with certification in Toronto, providing ease of implementation to members.

Health

We consulted with the Toronto City Council and Public Health Board to prevent a trans fat ban and ensured a harmonized approach with the federal standard.

Labour

Helped reduce injuries and their costs by working with Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and members to identify root causes and prevention.

CCGD developed a best practices manual to reduce musculoskeletal injuries in distribution centres.  This tool helped members to further enhance protection and associated benefits such as improved efficiencies.

Store Operations

Gift Cards - Provided early warning, communication and training to members which allowed them to be in full compliance with gift card legislation within a very short timeline.

Tobacco Displays - Worked with members to ensure full compliance within a challenging timeframe.

Right to Know - Fought against the Right to Know legislation which would have created Ontario specific labelling and instead members will continue with one federal set of labelling regulations.

Focus for 2008/09 will include:

Continue to support Foodland/Homegrown Ontario Marketing program promoting Ontario grown meats and produce.

Communicate the elements of the Organic Regulation, which is intended for implementation on December 14, 2008 to ensure support for the anticipated 20% annual growth in organics.

Continue to participate in consultations with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food on proposals to redefine labelling criteria for "Product of Canada" products.

Focus on developing effective and efficient stewardship programs and working with municipalities and provincial governments to continually improve our industry contribution to the 3R's program.

Introduce industry best practices and measure the success of efforts to reduce musculoskeletal injuries in our workplace.

Continue to be active in a number of fronts as Health Canada continues to focus on the development of guidelines and regulations on various health issues.  key priorities will include Trans Fat Task Force.
